5 Free things to do in Manchester this Autumn / Winter

As the seasons change, we’re looking for activities to do that keep us out of the cold, and help us save money for Christmas. By using the Chatloop app, we’ve searched online and through recommendations to bring you the best of free activities to do this Autumn / Winter in Manchester. 

Manchester Museum

Starting off with something a little more obvious, we have Manchester Museum. Host to a variety of different pieces from different cultures and time periods, this is a fun free thing to do for all ages, and regularly has a change out of special exhibitions. This month, you’ll find the Golden Mummies of Egypt which is sure to be a fun exhibition to wander around. Alongside this, you can find dinosaur bones, the South East Asia collection, and even live animals in the Vivarium! 

RHS Garden Bridgewater

Based in Worsley, RHS Garden Bridgewater will take you about 25 minutes to travel by car from the city centre. Whilst this is usually paid and ticketed, if you live in Salford you can visit free every Tuesday until May 2024. Many people eligible for benefits can also purchase tickets for just £1! Over Winter, you’ll find a sculpture trail, wreath making and even a magical light trail just for the festive season. 

Manchester Christmas Market

Whilst some of the Christmas markets may be pricey in Manchester, it’s free to walk around and get in the festive spirit. Take in the aromas around you, take a look at what’s on offer and get involved in the Christmas Spirit. Taking place from November 10th, these markets will be here to stay until December 21st so you have plenty of time to get involved!

Lightwaves Festival

From December 7th to December 10th, the Lightwaves Festival comes to Salford Quays. This is a trail of spectacular light art installations that animate and transform the area each Winter. It’s completely free to visit, all you need to do is turn up and walk around. You’ll find a selection of local and national artists who have contributed to this fun festival. 

Festive Sundays

Every Sunday from November 26th until Christmas, you can discover Festive Sundays in Manchester; which plays host to a range of festive street performances designed for kids and families to enjoy. Taking place across ​​St Ann’s Square, King Street, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, Exchange Square and Manchester Arndale, they’ll be hard to miss whilst strolling through town.
